Raw Hemp Milk

Hemp seeds are one of my favorite superfoods. Incorporating these complete protein seeds into my diet has made an incredible difference, especially with my workouts—thank you, Brendan Brazier. This recipe is inspired by his book Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life. You can use hemp milk as a protein-packed base for smoothies, add organic raw cacao powder for chocolate hemp milk, fresh fruit for a berry drink, or pour it over breakfasts like Apple Quinoa Cereal. This recipe is a cinch to make and it keeps in your refrigerator for 5-7 days.

Makes: approx. 3 cups  |  Preparation Time: 15mins

1 cup organic hemp seeds
3 cups coconut water, store-bought or fresh young coconut water
1 tbsp maple syrup, organic brown rice syrup, raw yacon syrup or raw honey to taste—of course you can leave the sweetener out if you’d like unsweetened Raw Hemp Milk.
Pinch Celtic or pink Himalayan sea salt

Let’s get started.
Place all your ingredients in the blender and mix for about 10-20 seconds. No need to strain this creamy milk. Use it right away or store in an airtight glass container in your refrigerator. If it separates in your fridge, just shake before using.

Doesn’t not straining it leave it grity/chunky? Especially when the hemp isn’t soaked first to make it softer?

Hi Melly, grittiness may happen if you have a blender with a weak motor, but since the seeds are already soft and full of beneficial oils, they tend to blend up very creamy.

    Hi Heather,

Love your recipes and make your non dairy milk all the time. Can I make the hemp seed milk with water instead of coconut water. Do you think it will affect the taste much? Was also planning on leaving out the sweetener this time, unless you think coconut nectar would work. Thanks!

      Hi there Regina,
You can definitely prepare hemp milk with water instead of coconut water. It will still be plenty creamy thanks to the essential fatty acids in the hemp seeds—it just won’t be sweet (coconut water has a subtle natural sweetness). I actually enjoy unsweetened hemp milk very much—try it out and experiment. Prepare a batch with simply, water and hemp seeds. Taste. Add a splash of vanilla, a pinch of sea salt. Taste. Try some sweetener. Taste. You’ll figure out what you like best this way. Have fun! x H
