Apple Pear Cilantro Smoothie

This recipe is a delicious variation of the Pear Cilantro Smoothie recipe found in the YU Test Drive (do you have your copy yet?). Cilantro is one of my favorite detoxifying herbs since it removes heavy metals from the system. This makes a city dweller like me feel a tad better about that unsettling view of the factory I have from my balcony.

This simple smoothie combination is a winner on so many levels. I have had a couple of YU Test Drivers (who were not fans of cilantro) tell me that they love the refreshing Pear Cilantro smoothie, so give this combo a try for taste and for the powerful antioxidant, phytonutrient and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cilantro contains the flavonoid (plant pigment), quercetin—which is also found in apple skin and raw honey. This a powerful detoxifying, anti-inflammatory beverage, easily blended for maximum assimilation resulting in loads of energy.

 

Makes: approx 4 cups
Prep time: 5-10 minutes

Tools:
Chef’s knife
Cutting board
Blender

Ingredients:
1 small, ripe, organic red apple of your choice
1 small, ripe, organic pear of your choice
2 large handfuls of organic cilantro leaves
1 large handful of organic mixed greens
1-2 tsp raw, wild-harvested honey
2 cups pure water (can use coconut water instead for extra electrolytes)

Let’s get started.
Wash and core your apples, leaving skins intact.

Wash and core your pear leaving skin intact.

Wash cilantro well.

Toss all ingredients in the blender and mix until thoroughly blended.

Pour into a lovely glass and enjoy. Store remaining in an airtight glass container. This smoothie is best fresh, but you can keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days. I tend to drink as much as I can at home for breakfast and bring the remaining with me to work to finish up.

Tips & Substitutions:
1. Feel free to use just apples or just pears
2. Try kale instead of mixed greens
3. A squeeze of fresh, organic lime juice and some lime zest will be a delicious addition
4. Add pure water ice cubes for a frostier version

    This is delicious! Did not have the greens, so just used less water. It is mildly sweet and has a wonderful light cilantro flavour. Thanks! My 2 year old loves it too 🙂

    This is so delicious! I used a granny smith apple, because that is what I had and I also added a kiwi! Loved it!
